Geometry Wars iPhone App Review

Geometry Wars is one of those games you don’t want to be playing when you get an itch on your nose. It requires concentration and reflexes. It’s a game where your entire screen will be smudged with finger oils because you’re so involved in the game. Or maybe that’s just me.

A .99¢ game that has taken the basic arcade space shooter and fed it LSD. You zip around a grid with a little spaceship thingy, blasting all these other geometric entities to hell. The shapes explode like Canada day fireworks, the grid bends and warps like a 3D maze. All this happens to the beat of an original techno sound track. Real techno, not that skrillex noise. Rave worthy techno.

For .99¢ you get the original evolution mode featured in the Xbox live arcade, and on the Wii, but this game is packed with more challenging modes. King of the hill, pacifist, titans, and so on. Most surprising is that these different modes are unique, and change the basic gameplay quite a bit. For example, in titans mode, you face off against giant versions of the shapes you battle in evolution. And when you destroy a Titan, it explodes into smaller versions. In king of the hill, you can only shoot within designated circles, and these circles shrink as time goes on. Pacifist is one of my favorite modes because you can’t shoot to kill. Instead you have to maneuver around hordes of enemies, and through these lines to eradicate your enemies.

If you like arcady games, check out Geometry Wars. The controls are smooth, even on an iPhone. Fat fingered gamers should have no problem either.
